1. What is porcelain?
Porcelain is a type of ultra hard-wearing ceramic made from refined clay, usually kaolin, that is fired at very high temperatures, making it hard, smooth, and slightly translucent; it’s known for being strong yet delicate-looking and is commonly used for wall and floor tiles.
2. How are porcelain tiles made?
Porcelain tiles are made by mixing finely ground raw materials, mainly kaolin, clay, feldspar, and silica. The raw material is then pressed into tile shapes and firing them in a kiln at very high temperatures (about 1,200–1,400 °C). This intense firing vitrifies the material, making the tiles dense, hard, low-porosity, and highly durable. Porcelain is also suitable for outdoor use and can withstand freezing temperatures.
3. How are porcelain tiles printed?
Porcelain tiles are printed mainly using ultra high-tech digital inkjet printers. In this process, the tile is first formed and dried, then special ceramic inks made from mineral pigments are digitally sprayed onto the surface using high-precision printers. These machines can cost over 5 million pounds! After printing, the tile is fired in a kiln, which permanently fuses the design into the tile’s surface, making the pattern durable, fade-resistant, and wear-resistant.
